Surrey Loams was founded in 1968 by George Hone, who recognised that the fine loams found in the Surrey hills represented something genuinely special — a natural material with unique properties that made it ideal for the construction and maintenance of sports turf.
George’s insight was that loam production was a science as much as a craft. By applying rigorous standards to sourcing, screening, blending and testing, he could produce loams of a consistency and quality that the sports turf industry had never seen before.
In 1981, the GOSTD brand — Graded Organic Sports Turf Dressings — was trademarked, giving a name to the standard that George had spent over a decade perfecting. The GOSTD trademark has since become the most recognised name in the UK sports loam industry.
Today, Surrey Loams is run by the Hone family, continuing George’s commitment to quality, consistency and scientific rigour. Every product is independently batch tested, every blend engineered to perform, and every customer supported by six decades of accumulated expertise.
